3 Common Imaging Tests for Orthopedic Injuries

Studies show a steady increase in physical activity in both adults and children in America in the last few years. With the growing popularity of exercise and organized sports comes an increase in orthopedic injuries.

Not all orthopedic injuries require a medical evaluation. Minor injuries typically heal with time, rest and ice. Depending on your injury and level of pain, you might need care from a medical expert.

If you or your loved-one’s orthopedic injury is serious, a doctor will most likely order an imaging test. These imaging tests provide important information to help diagnose your condition.

The most common imaging tests to treat orthopedic injuries are:

  1. X-Ray: Depending on the pain level and symptoms, the doctor may order an x-ray to ensure no fractures, dislocations, or broken bones.
  2. CT (Computer Tomography): A CT scan can detect a small tear in the bone tissue that an x-ray cannot pick up. These scans tell the doctor more about what is happening with the connective tissue in the body.
  3. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): An MRI test shows a detailed view of the body. The MRI is a practical option for spinal injuries, joint damage, muscular trauma and does not expose the person to any radiation.

If you have suffered from a sports injury, contact your healthcare provider to see what the next steps are in diagnosing your condition.
