Diagnosing Strokes with CT & MRI Scans

A stroke can be a medical emergency that may require immediate treatment. However, some strokes require a diagnostic imaging scan to identify the type of stroke while ruling out all other potential causes of stroke symptoms. The treating physician will order multiple tests when diagnosing a stroke, including blood tests, an electrocardiogram, and imaging tests, such as a CT scan or an MRI.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted due to a broken blood vessel. There are two types of stroke: hemorrhagic or ischemic. An ischemic stroke happens when a blood vessel carrying blood to the brain is blocked or restricted by a blood clot or narrow arteries. A hemorrhagic stroke occurs when the brain has a rupture in a blood vessel, and blood leaks into the brain.
