What is an MRI with Contrast?

The advancements in medical imaging technology continue to improve and create substantial benefits to our health and longevity. Magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ) and its ability to create a highly detailed picture of the soft tissue in our bodies give the doctor a substantial ability to diagnose and give a prognosis of our health. MRI is increasing the standard for high-resolution images.

MRIs have a unique ability to utilize contrast dye to add clarity and decipherability to your MRI image. A contrast MRI is ordered and approved by a patient's physician. Contrast dye means a gadolinium-based "dye" will be injected intravenously into the patient's arm during their MRI procedure. The contrast dye enhances the image quality and gives the radiologist more accuracy and confidence in their diagnosis.

Contrast dye in your veins enhances the visibility of:

  • Blood Vessels
  • Tumors
  • Inflammation
  • Organ's Blood Supply

An MRI image comprises shades of grey, varying from black to white. The dye is used to illuminate certain potential diseases. Adding contrast allows the radiologist to detect a tumor and provides information about the precise location of the tumor. An MRI image comprises shades of grey, varying from black to white. Contrast injections improve MRI diagnosis for accuracy of conditions such as inflammatory and infectious diseases of the brain, bones, tissue, and spine. Scans can show the function of blood vessels in their actual time, and many heart abnormalities can be assessed using contrast.

An MRI with contrast is necessary for the diagnosis of :

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Cancer
  • Diseases or conditions affect the soft tissue
  • Heart and artery
