Staying healthy is a top priority for most Americans. Sometimes health issues can be more complicated and require the use of medical technology to diagnose underlying conditions. Ultrasound is a great tool that gives doctors great insight into your body.
Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound pictures are taken in real-time, capturing the movement inside the body's internal organs and blood vessels. Ultrasound detects changes in the appearance and function of tissue, organs, and abnormal masses. There are many common life-threatening conditions ultrasound can detect, including:
- Heart Conditions
- Cancer
- Stroke
- Evaluate and identify the source of pain, swelling, and infections
- Detect brain abnormalities
- Evaluate issues that affect blood flow
An ultrasound scan usually takes around 20 to 40 minutes. The results of the ultrasound scan are typically sent to your doctor, so you will have to make a follow-up appointment with them to get the results.
An ultrasound examination is a critical tool in the diagnostic world and is generally non-invasive. Speak with your doctor to determine if an ultrasound is a good recommendation. Ask questions and discuss any concerns with your doctor before your scan.
